Layer HTV Like a Pro for Breast Cancer Awareness

Layer HTV Like a Pro for Breast Cancer Awareness

October is a special month for crafters and creators—it’s a time to raise awareness for Breast Cancer and show support through meaningful designs. Instead of using DTF, we decided to bring this project to life with layered HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl). Using a two-color design we found on Creative Fabrica, we’ll walk you through step-by-step how to layer HTV like a pro.

Materials You’ll Need

For this project, we kept it simple with just two sheets of vinyl—perfect for making a single shirt!

Step 1: Cut Your Design

Start by cutting your full design onto both the pink and black sheets of HTV. Even though you’re layering, you’ll want both sheets cut completely. This makes alignment easier later.

Step 2: Weed the Vinyl

Next, weed both sheets by removing the vinyl pieces you don’t want in your final design. This is where the magic happens—you’ll be left with just the parts of each color you need.

Pro Tip: The cut lines stay on the carrier sheet and act as built-in guides for lining things up perfectly later.

Step 3: Press the First Layer

Thread your garment onto the heat press and place your bottom layer of HTV (in our case, Bubblegum Pink). Since this is just the base, you don’t need to fully press it yet—tack it down for just 1–2 seconds.

Pressing temp: 305°F
Pressure: Medium

This quick tack will hold the vinyl in place while leaving it ready for the second layer.

Step 4: Add the Second Layer

Now it’s time for the black layer. Carefully line it up over your pink base using those cut lines as your guide. Once you’re satisfied with placement, press for the full time—10 to 15 seconds.

Step 5: Peel & Reveal

Once cooled slightly, peel back the carrier sheet to reveal your finished layered design! The contrast of black and pink really makes the design pop—and you’ve officially mastered layering HTV like a boss.

Why Layer HTV?

Layering HTV is a great way to bring dimension and vibrance to your projects. Instead of sticking to single-color designs, layering allows you to customize your garments with bold combinations that stand out. Plus, it’s easier than it looks!

This Breast Cancer Awareness project shows that even with just two sheets of vinyl, you can create something powerful and eye-catching. With the right technique, layering HTV opens up endless creative possibilities. Now it’s your turn—grab some vinyl, fire up your press, and layer like a pro!
